Happy Earth Day!

 Great Day to get Dirty!

This time of year is a good time to take a look at all the fun peeking up out of your garden after a long winter.  It's also the perfect time to clean it up and get rid of the dead strands and leaves of last year.  Those perennials that always seem to overwhelm a space or get out of control can be easily thinned down now or split into different ares or even some pots.

 ~WEEDS~

aka: the enemy!
If you see em' pull em'.  It's that simple!
If they are there now they will still be when you start planting so clear some space and get your dirt ready.

The other enemy are the random perennial seeds that blew around in your garden last year and are now baby plants.
If you see em' pull em!
( Sensing a theme ?)
Look at the size of this root! It will continue to grow and become harder to pull by hand and getting rid of totally.  You want to do that now so you don't have to dig down into a plant and disturb it's roots.

Iris', hosta's and peonies are all starting to grow. They didn't ask for these unwanted invaders and while they may be great plants to split up and share in other spots of your garden or with friends if you don't have to hack into them with a shovel it's nice to leave them alone.

One of springs best gifts!
I prefer to trim or transplant all the shoots that are coming up from the bottom.  It gives the bigger branches a little more character and keeps your focus on the beautiful tree and not the messy distraction underneath.

Turned over this garden last week before the rain. Weeds are out and hopefully after a little scuffling today the peas, potatoes and beets will be in.

Happy Earth Day to me:)

Spring Cleaning!

Well it's already the middle of April and even though I've been wishing for green since February it is now finally starting to look a little like spring!Unfortunately with spring comes the cleaning (It feels like I've just put away the Christmas decorations). A big part of my cleaning takes place first in my shed, then my garden and lastly the house.

C'mon In......

Welcome! As you can see I have my work cut out for me.  My Mom Cave is loaded with winter storage. The deck box, patio furniture, hose wheel and fire pit in the corner,
my turd filled shelves and table....
and the loft mouse living quarters complete with tomato cages and lounge above.

 Hmmm, where do you start?

It's not very often the Farmer/Warden gets a honey-do list from me but yesterday with it being about 60 degrees plus i may have rattled off a few small demands.
It went a little something like this:
please empty the two mouse traps, can I have my hose hooked back up, my tiller probably needs and oil change, can you bring home some fertilizer and when do I get the Gator back?
He of coarse sensibly replied sure and that I might be getting ahead of myself.  He also has a HUGE 'get er' done' list of his own this time of year because hopefully soon
 he'll be busy as hell.

So for now I'll take out the patio furniture and the rest in that corner so the rain from the next couple of days will get it all rinsed off for me.  Give it all a good sweep and maybe a power wash. ( Guess i need to ask him to get that for me too, maybe on the weekend.;)

So in the mean time, even though us girls are ready to go, I'm headed to Lowe's after lunch to pick up some new gloves and clippers and who knows what else I might find.

Tis' the season after all, we've got the fever! Do you?
